Two community clean-ups have been proposed in Cullingworth over the next 12 months.

The village’s bowling club and parish council want to carry out litter picks, with cash from Bradford Council.

The events are part of a proposed £20,000 annual clean-up programme across the Shipley area.

Shipley Area Committee was last night expected to approve 19 clean-ups around the constituency.

A similar programme last year included litter picks in Denholme, Cullingworth and Wilsden, and an anti-dog fouling campaign in Crossflatts.

The committee, part of Bradford Council, was due to receive a report on last year’s collections and future plans.

The report stated that a number of community litter picks ran smoothly and bulky waste collections went well.

A council spokeswoman said that in recent years clean-ups had been dominated by the removal of unwanted bulky items which residents put out specially on the day.

She said: “Although the service is popular it has done little to encourage recycling and re-use and is becoming more expensive in terms of collection and disposal.

“The need to recycle more during clean-ups is essential if costs are to be kept at a minimum.”

This year the council is instead focusing on more cost-effective clean-ups which deliver long-lasting environmental improvements.

Such “days of action” bring together street sweeping, gully cleaning, land clearance and involvement of other agencies like police and fire service.

They can be accompanied by education campaigns and enforcement action.
