Urgent repairs to Harden Congregational Chapel will be funded from a £1.44 million grant.

Cash from the Heritage Lottery Fund and English Heritage will be shared between 11 Yorkshire churches. The money will fund investigative works at the Harden church to assess the need for roof repairs and renewal of rainwater systems. The money has been awarded under the Joint Places of Worship Scheme.

Over the past seven years the scheme has invested £8 million tackling decay in the region’s grade two listed churches, temples and chapels.

Problems have included crumbling masonry and badly-leaking roofs.

English Heritage spokesman Trevor Mitchell said places of worship were among the most vulnerable historic buildings.

He said: “They often stand at the heart of our communities, so the help we have been able to give with the Heritage Lottery Fund has been crucial. A leaking roof can soon lead to much bigger repair bills down the road, so timely action is the key.

“But while our support is vital, it’s not enough to keep pace with the backlog of repairs.”
