A heavy downpour failed to dampen the spirits at Sunday afternoon’s Cullingworth Gala.

Hundreds turned out to enjoy and support the event, organised from scratch by a new committee.

The fun began in Station Road with a procession led by the Imperial Crusaders Marching Band.

The parade included a pair of floats, as well as many people walking in costumes.

This year’s gala queen, Georgia Beith, was accompanied by her three attendants, Lauren Blues, Sophie Dyson and Natasha Dore.

The main event took place at Cullingworth Cricket Club, where there was a jazz band, songs performed by Cullingworth Primary School Choir, children’s rides, a bouncy castle and fairground attractions.

People sampled refreshments and a variety of stalls. There were also races and a fancy dress competition.

Cullingworth Rainbows and Brownies won the award for the best float.

The chairman of the organising committee, Leonie Padgett, said between 600 and 1,000 people came to the gala.

She said: “The weather was horrendous at first when we were setting things up and we got absolutely soaked.

“But then the rain stopped and we didn’t get another drop all afternoon. We didn’t have a gala last year and we’ve had to set up a new committee.

“We agreed we’d need at least £500 for this to go ahead but the response we got from the village was brilliant.

“We raised much more money than we expected.”

She voiced her thanks to all members of the committee for their efforts, including the group’s secretary, Joelle Richmond.
