Hopkins backed to stay as leader

Bradford Council's Tory leader has received the support of both Conservative and Liberal Democrat groups to continue in the post for a further year.

Worth Valley councillor Kris Hopkins was re-appointed at Tuesday's annual meeting of the council. The Conservatives and Liberal Democrat group, led by Coun Jeanette Sunderland, also pledged to co-operate for the benefit of all the area's residents.

Cllr Hopkins said: "I am once again both privileged and honoured to be given the opportunity to continue to serve Bradford district as leader of the council.

"I would like to pay a very warm tribute to Cllr Sunderland and her Liberal Democrat colleagues for the constructive approach they have taken in our discussions over the past two weeks. As a result we will continue to work very closely to improve the quality of local people's lives across a wide range of areas.

"Education will continue to be our shared priority, followed very closely by adult social care, the regeneration of our district, protection of the local environment and the development of a more cohesive society."

Cllr Sunderland said: "I am pleased we have been able to agree on a shared outlook for local people who, quite rightly, expect us to deliver for them. There are many problems in Bradford district that need to be addressed.

"We must improve education standards and provide more help for special schools. We must ensure our older residents receive the best possible care, the regeneration programme must be delivered, the green belt must be protected, community cohesion must move higher up the agenda and better sports facilities must be provided."

The elections at the start of this month left the Liberal Democrats with 14 seats on Bradford Council. The Conservatives have 35 seats and Labour 36. The remaining five seats are split between the Green Party and the British National Party.

n Cllr Adrian Naylor is the council's new executive member for regeneration and economy. He succeeds fellow Craven Ward Tory Cllr Andrew Mallinson, who was sacked earlier this month.
