Organisers of this year’s hugely successful Oxenhope Straw Race are celebrating reaching a major fundraising milestone.

They have announced the July event generated £10,000, with more charity cash still to come.

Race secretary Jane Barrett said in September she and her colleagues had collected a “wonderful” total of £7,000 at that point, but they were expecting thousands more.

On Friday, Jane confirmed: “We’ve reached £10,000 and we still have a month to go.

“We would like to appeal to anyone, if they’ve got any outstanding sponsorship money, to send it in.”

Cheques should be sent to Oxenhope Straw Race, Rose Lea, 36 Canberra Drive, Cross Roads, Keighley BD22 9DG.

More than 230 teams sweated their way through some scorching weather to take part in this summer’s straw race, which is now in its 38th year.

Each team of two carried a bale of straw from the Waggon & Horses pub to the Dog & Gun, calling en route at the Bay Horse, social club, Lamb and former Shoulder of Mutton, downing a drink at each.

Since it began, the race has raised more than £350,000 for a variety of local good causes.
