RESIDENTS and business volunteers united for the latest challenge day at Braithwaite Community Allotments.

They continued efforts to create Keighley’s first ‘open-air community centre’ offering a base for a host of environmentally-friendly activities.

The volunteers dug in with a range of tasks to improve the site ready for the planting of fruit and vegetables next spring.

Community worker Pip Gibson, who is spearheading the project, said those taking part included employees of Crossflatts financial firm UKAR.

The said: “Volunteers from all walks of life came together to dig, paint, build and clear the area of unwanted vegetation.”

“As with all our outdoor community involvement events, a varied menu of street food for all tastes and refreshments was available on the day.

“The idea behind the project is not just to grow fruit herbs and vegetables but to provide unique environmental educational opportunities for both adults and children living in Keighley.”

Pip said the project was receiving a great deal of support from Participate Projects who organised volunteering opportunities for community-minded employees from organisations and companies large and small on a national basis.

The allotment project began last summer with an open day to generate interest amongst residents.
