YOUNG people from Keighley have become the first group to receive full certificates of the Lord Mayor’s Award.
Councillor Mike Gibbons, the Lord Mayor of Bradford, visited the Bangladeshi Community Association to present the 11 certificates.
Parents, ward councillors and respected local elders watched the ceremony at the long-established association’s base in Kensington Street.
The recipients were Afzal Khan, Burhan Uddin, Adil Hussain, Kashif Ali, Toyhub Ullah, Sameeal Islam, Jakir Hussain, Shahinur Rahman, Rabbool Islam, Shuhanur Rahman and Ibrahim Ali.
To achieve their award the young people had to complete three sections.
Be Someone involved young people learning new skills that would help them in the future, such as life, hobby or employment skills.
Be Active involved commitment to physical activity, or a range of activities to benefit their health, such as football, dance or gym.
Be Valued was all about ‘positivity’ and the young people helping others while gaining from the experience, such as carrying out community work or helping a local charity.
A spokesman said: “All who attended were proud and inspired by the achievements of the young people. There was community pride.
“There was excitement, a feeling of motivation and inspiration during the presentation. Young people could not stop talking about the humbleness of the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress.”
Cllr Gibbons, said: “It is fantastic to see young people taking an active role in their community and helping others. These awards reflect their hard work and commitment."
