KEIGHLEY Playhouse opened its doors to the public so they could witness what goes on behind the scenes.

Visitors were able to see rehearsals for the group’s forthcoming production of JB Priestley’s classic comedy When We Are Married.

Playhouse chairman Debbie Park said the open evenings, the first of their kind at the Devonshire Street theatre, were a great success.

She said: “People were given an access-all-areas pass to the theatre and we were overwhelmed by the positive response.

“It was the first time we had given the public a chance to see what it’s like to design and build a set, furnish it with props, and rehearse in time for curtain-up on opening night.

“The dedicated task to produce seven plays during a season gave an insight and an appreciation that maintain our high standard, which requires an absolute six-week deadline for each production.”

The public were greeted by Keighley Playhouse members on arrival and were given a backstage tour to view the costumes, props and lighting departments.

They watched rehearsals in progress for the celebrated Victorian comedy – due to be performed from December 8 to 13 – under the direction of Robin Martin.

Playhouse members told visitors about the theatre’s resident ghost, which has been sighted in the warren of corridors and steep stairways, walking across the stage or residing in the props department.

Membership secretary Nikki Barrett said: “Over two evenings our membership increased with volunteers wanting to get involved backstage.

“We have seen the return of some former members as well as new faces that will maintain the legacy of Keighley’s own premier theatre.”

Playhouse Barbara Ramsden said the backstage tours culminated in a visit to the bar for drinks.

She added: “The response was amazing and it’s something we will definitely consider again for next year.”
