A memorial service to commemorate the crew of a bomber aircraft which crashed in Oakworth was staged in the village on Sunday afternoon.

Oakworth Village Society held the annual event at Tewitt Lane.

The service honoured the memory of six Canadian airmen, who were killed when their Wellington bomber crashed there in thick fog during the Second World War.

About 80 people attended the service, which was conducted by the Rev John Rogers, with readings by Noeline Sharp and Janet Armstrong.

Among the guests were the Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Howard Middleton, accompanied by the Lady Mayoress, and Major Claude Paul of the Canadian Air Force.

Also present were Keighley mayor Cllr Amjad Zaman, the town’s deputy mayor and mayoress and the deputy Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire Richard Jackson.

Members of the Royal British Legion paid their respects to the fallen airmen.

Oakworth village correspondent, Jackie McGinnis, said: “I know that their families back home in Canada appreciate it, as we occasionally have visitors and letters from them.”
