A pub which regularly opened into the early hours is to close just after midnight after complaints from residents.

Councillors considered an application to review the licence of The Old Sun Inn, West Lane, Haworth, on Monday.

There had been complaints about noise and anti-social behaviour, prompting Councillor Doreen Lee (Lab, Keighley East) to submit an application for the pub’s licence to be reviewed.

She told the Keighley and Shipley Licensing Panel that noise from customers late at night and from those using the smoking area was the main concern.

She said: “What matters is people’s quality of life and the quality of life of those who live around the Old Sun Inn is being absolutely destroyed. People are actually going away at the weekends to get away from it.”

The panel decided to reduce the pub’s hours from 1.30am in the week and 2.30am on Fridays and Saturdays, to 12.30am all week, after an offer from the pub managers to bring the opening times in line with others in the area.

Chairman of the panel, Councillor John Ruding (Lab, Tong), said that the pub could open an extra hour on bank holiday weekends, but that when it does a doorman must be employed.

He reminded the licensee Susan Duke that existing conditions on the licence already state that no alcohol must be taken outside after 10pm, regular meetings must be held with residents and that notices must be displayed asking customers to leave quietly.

David Lucas, for owners Greene King, said that they had refurbished the restaurant to make it more of a family pub. He said a number of changes had been implemented including fitting a noise limiter on equipment.

The meeting at Bradford’s City Hall heard how the application was backed by letters from residents and a petition.

Inspector Andrew Croasdale, of the Bingley and Worth Neighbourhood Policing Team, gave details of an action plan which was agreed following discussions last year with the licensee. This involved employing approved door staff on Fridays and Saturdays and no music to be played after midnight, which had seen the situation improve.
