A junior football club has raised £600 to thank cancer nurses for the care they gave to one of its biggest fans.

Oakworth Juniors held two major events to boost the funds of the Haematology Oncology Day Unit at Airedale Hospital after Sue Hewitt, the wife of club secretary Richard, was treated for breast and ovarian cancer.

A fundraising party was staged to celebrate Sue’s 50th birthday and there was a charity match with former players to mark the opening of a new clubhouse.

Richard, who is also a club coach, said: “All the players and club members were just glad to have two brilliant opportunities to give something back to the staff who provided Sue with such fantastic care when she was ill. We are delighted that she is making a good recovery and is really keen to get back to work.”

Pat Dyminski, clinical nurse specialist, said: “It is brilliant that these young people have decided to support our unit.”
