Haworth couple Tony and Wendy Jenkins have more reason than most grandparents to be emotional about a new addition to the family.
For their granddaughter has been named Sarah after a baby they lost nearly three decades ago.
Tony said their granddaughter’s arrival, at Airedale Hospital on Christmas Day, was the best present they could have wished for.
“This is very emotional but very nice for us because our first baby was born with Edwards syndrome, and she was called Sarah,” he said. “She only lived for four months – that was 28 years ago.”
He said his son, Michael, and daughter-in-law, Elisa Adams, who are originally from Haworth but now living in Denholme, discovered on August 9 last year their first child would be a girl and announced the following day they would be calling her Sarah.
Tony added: “We’d no idea they were going to do that but they were adamant.”
The other proud grandparents of Sarah, who was born weighing 8lbs 2ozs, are Steve and Marie Adams, who also live at Haworth.
