Heavy rain failed to stop this year’s sheepdog trials in Oakworth raising thousands more pounds for charity.

The organisers of the New Year’s Day trials at Moor Lodge Farm said that despite “shocking” weather the event raised £2,301 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

The contest was staged by Carol Mellin and her son Philip. Mrs Mellin said: “We couldn’t have had a worse day weather wise – it was belting it down.”

She said 46 people brought their dogs to take part in the competition, which was judged by world-renowned sheepdog handler Jim Cropper. Mr Cropper won the nursery class at the trials in 2011. In the nursery class this year, Will Bell, of Salterforth, came first with his dog Taff on 83 points.

In second place, also on 83 points, was Arthur Temple, from Holmrook, with Jill. Third place went to Alison Salisbury, of Riddlesden, with Bill.

The novice category was won by Brenda Helliwell, from Quernmore, with Craig – the pair were awarded 64 points.

Second place went to Oxenhope resident Elaine Hill, with Tate, who scored 61 points. In third place with 53 points was M Petyt, with his dog Sky.
