Entrepreneurs make it to regional finals
A team of entrepreneurs from South Craven School, in Cross Hills, will take part in the North Yorkshire regional final of the national Young Enterprise contest this month.
The team, made up of sixth-form students, came first last week in the local stage of the competition in Harrogate. The seven pupils have set up a company called "Mugshot" which specialises in photography.
They have advertised around the school and brought in custom from fellow students who have had individual and group pictures taken.
The team has also produced the year books for years 11 and 13, as well as the school Christmas cards for 2008. It has to run its company like a proper business - selling shares to raise money, providing a business plan and giving each member of the board a specific responsibility. A spokesman for the school said: "For the local stage of the competition the team had prepared an interim report and an accounts balance, which the judges read before the assessment.
"On the day itself, the team members set up a trade stand, gave a presentation and were interviewed at length about their business. As the judges were giving their verdicts, they feared they were going to lose as they didn't feature in any of the best of' prizes but to their relief and excitement they were chosen as the overall winners.
"The judges stated that their administration, teamwork and communications were first rate.
"Even better, their company had made a profit of £1,692."
The regional finals are on May 14, at Harrogate Pavilion.
