Green project bearing fruit
 |
| Children from Cullingworth Primary School are joined by parents and grandparents for the start of the composting project |
Pupils at Cullingworth Primary School are putting their fruit waste to excellent use.
The year one children, who receive a free piece of fruit every day, are using the leftovers to make a compost heap in the school grounds.
As part of their creative curriculum, which this term is entitled "Reduce, Re-use, Recycle", the children are getting their hands green and dirty by combining the fruit waste with garden waste in large outdoor compost bins.
Year one teacher Elena O'Hare said the exercise teaches the children how to work in a team and care for the environment.
She said: "The children are collecting the waste in small plastic compost boxes and then placing it in a large compost bin in the school grounds.
"The long-term idea is that when the compost is ready, we could eventually use it in allotments that we are planning to build."
Head teacher John Corn said that the compost-building exercise was teaching the pupils lessons in life.
He said: "It is helping them to make decisions and will be part of working towards the school achieving the bronze Eco Status Award, which we hope to get soon."
Action Earth donated £50 to the school so that it could buy small compost buckets in which the pupils collect garden and fruit waste.
