Discontent over Bradford Council resurfacing work along part of the Tour de France route is continuing to rumble on.

The Keighley News reported a fortnight ago on how councillors and local residents were annoyed at the quality of the work carried out in Changegate, Haworth.

Asphalt was laid down over the old surface late last month. But some of this new material has also covered over several rows of setts, close to where Changegate joins the top of Main Street.

Haworth, Cross Roads and Stanbury parish councillor Angel Kershaw said that the asphalt over these setts destroys the illusion of the picturesque Main Street setts continuing over the brow of the hill. She said the setts which have been asphalted over on Changegate must be uncovered again as soon as possible.

“These are what attracted the Tour organisers – the appearance of the setts going all the way up the street,” she said. “They won’t be expecting to see them covered in asphalt.

“I think the district council has made a right mess of it. They’ve tried to do a cheap job and I understand they have budget constraints.

“But it’s penny wise and pound foolish, because it’ll cost more for them to put things right. Sometimes it’s better to just do a good job in the first place.”

A spokesman for Welcome to Yorkshire, which is promoting the Tour de France Grand Depart, said technical matters such as road surfacing were not part of its remit.

In response to the same issue, a spokesman for Tour de France Hub 2014, said: “Local authorities along the route are carrying out programmes of road improvements and maintenance ahead of the race coming. There are currently no concerns around the effectiveness of that work.”

Bradford Council has previously said that the resurfacing in Changegate was intended to make the road suitable for the Tour cyclists, who are due to ride through the village on July 6. The spokesman said the only setts on Changegate were those which had become visible where the older asphalt road surface had been worn away.
