Keighley Cougars wipe slate clean for Daley Williams
Cougars coach Paul March has expressed his delight at bringing Daley Williams back to the club.
The Jamaican international has signed a one-year deal at Keighley, having had spells at Batley and Dewsbury Rams last season.
Williams left the Bulldogs due to disciplinary reasons and also departed Cougar Park under a cloud back in 2010 when Barry Eaton was in charge.
But new Keighley coach March believes the centre has put those problems behind him and can be a key player for his side in the Championship next season.
March said: “I’m really pleased to sign him. I tried to get him when I was coach at York and he was at Salford but he slipped through the net.
“He will be coming back to familiar territory and he is excited and looking forward to the challenge.”
On Williams’ previous issues with indiscipline, March added: “I’ve heard all about that but this is a clean slate as far as I’m concerned.
“He will get the same opportunity as everyone else. Daley has a chance to prove himself here and it’s up to him now.
“We’ve had a chat and that’s all in the past now. I’m confident that Cougars fans will see the best of him.”
March believes Williams can be one of the Cougars’ key attacking weapons next season as they aim to build on their sixth-place finish back in the game’s second tier this year.
He said: “Daley is a try-scorer, he is quick and has great hands. He is also versatile – as well as centre, he can play full back and wing.”
Williams will also boost the already sizeable Jamaican international contingent at Keighley.
He joins fellow new signing Ross Peltier, who has arrived from Huddersfield Giants, Richie Barnett, Jamaine Wray and Jodie Sheriffe.
Meanwhile, March is eagerly anticipating the start of pre-season training next week.
Many of the squad have already started working with club conditioner Paul Royston but the players officially start their build-up to next season with their first training session next Tuesday.
March said: “I’m really excited about getting out there again. The lads have been texting and phoning one another and we’re really buzzing for it.”
Supporters will get their first chance to see the new squad in action on Boxing Day when they welcome Halifax to Cougar Park for a friendly (kick-off noon).
The fixture is likely to see new Cougars recruits Paul White, James Haley and Sean Hesketh line up against their former employers.
