Legside wides on league's agenda

First published in Sport by

Bowlers may have to be more accurate in first-team First Division matches in the Aire-Wharfe League next season.

Kirkstall Educational have proposed that deliveries passing down the leg side shall be called a wide, and as that has been seconded by Guiseley, the proposed rule change will go forward to the annual meeting at Otley Rugby Union Club on Tuesday, November 27.

Some clubs felt that the restriction should apply to all first-team matches but Kirkstall reckoned that would have put too much of a burden on bowlers outside the top-flight.

Kirkstall have also proposed that 30-yard fielding circles be adopted to discourage negative field settings. This was seconded by Collingham.

Silsden seconded Bolton Villas’ proposal that the first round of the Waddilove Cup and Birtwhistle Cup be played on a Saturday, while Otley proposed that all ten players (rather than five) should bowl one delivery in a bowl-out, Steeton raising their hand to second that.

Horsforth and Skipton were re-elected, Horsforth gaining 30 votes and Skipton, who were one of two clubs not to attend the meeting (Upper Wharfedale were the others), 29. Old Modernians, from the Wetherby League, received seven votes.
