Baildon's Zak Spencer and Jake Barnett were among 11 gold-medal winners as Quest Taekwondo finished first in the Yorkshire Open Sparring Championships at Bradford’s Richard Dunn Sports Centre.

Other event champions were Jamie Kidd (Silsden), Ellie Bowden (Cullingworth), Daniel Sparkes (Greengates) and Kieran Young (Bradford).

Quest hosted the event with national governing body British Taekwondo, and it attracted 270 entrants from across the country.

Of the 36 participating clubs, Quest Taekwondo came top, also taking eight silvers and 11 bronzes, in a team score of 112 points from their 37 members.

Runners-up were Liverpool Academy (98 points) and in third place was Team Ultimate (Doncaster, 42 points).

The competitors were coached by Master Mike McKenzie (Penistone), Rick Simpson (Bradford), Oliver Thornton (Bradford), Karl Mann (Leeds), Ashley Nicholas (Liverpool) and Joanne Lawson (Liverpool), and the age of Quest competitors ranged from six to 42.

Notable performances came from: Jamie Kidd, who defeated Daniel Ocego from Liverpool Academy 12-2 in the quarter-finals, Daniel Brown of Scorpion Taekwondo (Doncaster) 12-8 in the semi-finals, and Ibrahim Hussain from Hadri Taekwondo (London) 14-1 in the final.

Jamie's coach Rick Simpson said: "The scores don't look it but these weren't poor opposition he was playing against - these were top-class competitors - Jamie was really focused, putting his disappointment from Scotland behind him".

Zak emphatically defeated four opponents to claim his second gold in successive competitions, and Simpson added: "It's as though everything has come together since Zak's disappointment at the British National Championships, where he lost to the eventual silver medallist in the quarter-finals.

"He's been training his backside off to improve his kicking range and accuracy - and it's clearly paid off!".

Jake, 16, who has had a record-breaking year, took gold after defeating Oliver Spencer from Stoke UTA in the semi-finals and a dramatic last-second kick won it for him in the final against Jamie Wright from Sport TKD Plymouth.

Kieran, 18, got off to a great start with his new club by convincingly defeating Mahdi Rezai from TKD Machine (Manchester).

Despite Kieran's opponent being over a foot taller, he was still able to land head kicks on his opponent to win in style.

Simpson said: "Kieran is a top-class player and we're looking forward to him competing in Europe next year".

Daniel, 11, won his third successive event, defeating clubmate Liam Exley, ten, from Shipley. Daniel's coach Karl Mann said that he is looking forward to seeing him in action at the Children's International Championships in Germany in 2013.

Ellie, 11, rounded off an excellent season with her third straight medal, following her bronze at the British National Championships in September and gold at the Scottish Cup.

* Quest Taekwondo, which has clubs in Keighley, Bingley, Cottingley, Baildon and Greengates, celebrated their second top-three finish of the year at the Scottish International Cup at Grangemouth.

Six golds, two silvers and three bronzes were enough to give Quest third place.

Gold medals went to 11-year-olds  Karl Harris, from Bingley, and Ellie Bowden, who was returning to action for the first time since September, when she won gold and bronze respectively at the British National Championships in September.

Greengates’ Gary Watt, ten, beat his Central Academy (Scotland) opponent by 12 points in the third round, and other golds went to Zak Spencer (Baildon), Daniel Sparkes (Greengates) and Harriet Akeroyd (Settle).
