Bobbie Goulding junior provided the inspiration as Cougars were condemned to a 36-22 defeat at Doncaster in their final pre-season friendly.

The rookie half-back, whose father Bobbie senior captained St Helens at Wembley and won 17 Great Britain caps between 1990 and 1997, has joined Doncaster on dual registration from Wakefield.

And the 20-year-old produced a stunning performance in the number six shirt, kicking all six conversions and being heavily involved as Doncaster dominated the first half, and later spells of the second period.

The home side had raced into a 24-0 lead as Cougars, who welcomed back Scott Law and Daley Williams, were a distinct second-best.

The home side opened the scoring when a fine break from Brett Waller put in Chris Spurr and Goulding converted.

Soon after, Lee Waterman went over before the newly-promoted Dons went further in front from close range as more good link up play found Grant Edwards in space to score.

Doncaster continued their dominance and it was no surprise when home debutant Dennis Tuffour went over in the corner, and once again Goulding kicked a superb conversion to put the Dons 24-0 up.

Cougars replied through Williams before the break and Andy Shickell added a second to bring the visitors back into the game.

Ritchie Barnett added a third Cougars try but Doncaster struck twice again to ensure Scott Leatherbarrow’s late try was mere consolation for Paul March's men.

Leatherbarrow kicked three goals from four attempts as Cougars now look to put things right before their Championship opener at Batley on February 3.
