Rebekah Tiler could be heading for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year if she continues her formidable progression.

The 14-year-old Bingley Grammar School pupil broke an astonishing 47 British and regional records at the weekend on her international debut in Sweden.

The man who keeps the national weightlifting statistics better have a new nib on his pencil after the Denholme’s teenager’s efforts in the Tri-Nations Championship against the hosts and Norway in Landskona, Sweden.

Rebekah’s mum Emma explanied how it was possible to break so many records in one competition, saying: “Rebekah only turned 14 in January and was competing against people who are under-18s, so she was setting new marks at under-15, under-16, under-17, under-18, and under-20 at Northern and British level, and under-23 at regional level.”

And the scales didn’t help Rebekah either. Her mum said: “On the day, Rebekah was 63.2kg so she had to go into the 69kg category instead of the 63kg.

“She wasn’t going for any personal bests, and had 96kg in the clean and jerk and 73kg in the snatch for a 169kg total as England defeated both Norway and Sweden.

“The selectors have said that if she continues to progress at this rate, she has a chance of competing in the Commonwealth Games next year in Glasgow.

“But before that she has the European Youth Weightlifting Championships in Klaipeda, Lithuania in September, and the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Malaysia in November.

“There are also the English Weightlifting Championships at Lilleshall on Sunday, February 17 and the British Schools’ Weightlifting Championship on March 2 at Oldbury in the West Midlands.

“Rebekah is now concentrating on weighlifting as her sport rather than athletics as her preparation for weightlifting tends to make her slower at running.”
