Campion reserves 0 Oxenhope Rec reserves 3

Oxenhope progressed to the quarter-finals of the West Riding County Trophy with an impressive win over West Riding County Amateur League side Campion.

The in-form Tom Thompson took the plaudits with a well-taken hat-trick.

The bad weather meant the tie took place at the third attempt and both teams took time to settle.

Campion put Rec under early pressure but stand-in keeper Grahame Ellis and man of the match central defender Dayne Ward were in commanding form.

With half-time approaching, and against the run of play, Oxenhope took the lead. Joel Bairstow won the ball on the left, pushed in to the Campion half before releasing Thompson to calmly lob the keeper.

Oxenhope extended their advantage on the hour-mark when Rob Pullan put Thompson through on goal and he rifled into the top left corner.

Five minutes later Craig Morris evaded two strong challenges as he strode into the six-yard box, only to be brought down by the home keeper. However, the custodian red-eemed himself by saving a well-struck Will Lee penalty.

With ten minutes left, Oxenhope made the tie safe when Michael Donohoe found Thompson breaking across two defenders and the striker drove his shot into the bottom right corner to secure his hat-trick.

Oxenhope face another County Amateur side, Golcar reserves, in the quarter-finals at the Recreation Ground on Saturday (1pm).

They are bidding for a third semi-final, having reached the same stage in 2007 and 2010, both times going out to the eventual trophy winners Otley reserves and Huddersfield League side Thornhill.
