St Helens Town 2 Silsden 1

Silsden slipped to another defeat in the North West Counties Premier Division when they beaten at lowly St Helens Town.

The margin of defeat was narrow and the Cobbydalers were twice denied by the woodwork but it could still have been a heavier loss as St Helens created most of the chances.

St Helens broke the deadlock on the half-hour after halting a Cobbyalers’ attack. The ball was stolen from Joe Gaughan and Charles Stoker raced down the right flank before netting a shot from an acute angle across the face of goal.

Gaughan redeemed himself with the goal of the game to equalise for the visitors in the 52nd minute, hitting a volley from the centre circle straight into the top corner.

Just four minutes later James Nanje-Ngoe went on a good run and crossed for Jake McEneaney but his header came back off the bar and was cleared.

The home side were doing most of the pressing, though, and they eventually took the lead 15 minutes from time. A free-kick was whipped in from near the touchline and Cole Ashton slid it home at the far post.

Silsden almost sneaked a late leveller when a through ball from Gaughan sent substitute Chris Wademan free and his cross from the edge of the area found Mike Garrod but his shot hit the post.
