Silver lining for Keighley's Dad
12:57pm Thursday 28th February 2013 in Sport
Keighley’s Arfan Dad has won his first title on the professional GB Nine-ball tour.
Dad triumphed in the Challenge Cup at the opening event of the season in Telford, the Midlands Classic.
The Powerhouse Pool-backed player beat Bruno Muratore 6-5 in the final to scoop the £325 winning prize and put him top of the Challenge Cup early rankings.
On his way to the final, Dad defeated Massimo Laucci 6-0, followed by Alan Conway 6-2. He then produced a 6-4 win in each of his next three matches against Benji Buckley, Liam Waterworth and Jez Graham, who knocked Keighley’s Mosconi Cup star Chris Melling out in the quarter-finals.
The Challenge Cup provides a second chance for players beaten in the main competition, which saw Phil Burford overcome Ralf Souquet in the final.
But Dad, who was beaten by former top snooker player Tony Drago in the main event, was still delighted to get his hands on some silverware.
Having joined the tour in 2011, he said: “It’s up there with my biggest wins. The field was really high quality and there were quite a few in the top ten that missed out.”
Keighley’s Martin Chapman also made the last eight of the Challenge Cup.
The next event is the Paul Medati Trophy at the same venue from April 12-14.
