Wears hit peak form as Denholme seal play-offs title
It was a great day for the Wear family as Denholme won the Bradford Evening League play-offs for the first time since 2007 to add to the Division One title.
Richard Wear (50no) and Roshi Livera (43) helped post a score of 152-6 against Wibsey Park Chapel in the semi-finals.
The Division Three champions could only reply with 133-9 as Andy Wear picked up 3-18.
The other semi saw Division Two winners Smart Moves score nearly 100 runs in the last eight overs to reach 150-5, with skipper Asad Abass (52no) and Younis Bismillah (51no) doing the damage.
But Division One runners-up Windhill responded in fine fashion, led by captain Jack Holland (48), with Don Bennett (25no) seeing them through to the final in the last over.
That meant that Denholme, who had claimed the championship crown over Windhill by the narrow margin of having the best average, faced their rivals again for the play-off title.
Denholme batted first and openers Chris Welch and Richard Wear made their intentions clear by scoring 14 off the first over.
They both continued to score freely in making half-centuries and after 13 overs the score was 131-0.
The runs continued to flow and, despite Danny Maguire taking four late wickets, the final total reached 176-5.
This was always going to be a stiff challenge – and matters got worse for Windhill when Jack Hartley took a fine caught and bowled in the first over of their reply.
Three wickets for Andy Wear and another three for brother Matty meant the opposition never really mounted a serious challenge and they were all out for 100.
The league would to like to thank all those that attended and enjoyed a splendid day of cricket played in glorious sunshine, with Windhill once again proving excellent hosts.
