A nine-goal cup bonanza between most people’s favourites to lift the Keighley Cup this season saw holders Steeton crash out of the Keighley Cup in the first round.
It was a superb game for the massed ranks of spectators to watch but one to drive the managers crazy as six goals were scored in the final 12 minutes.
The visitors had first sight of goal when a Dan Moriarty free-kick was palmed across goal by Steeton keeper Phil Rishton. It ricocheted off the far post and was almost converted by the inrushing Scott Nelson.
The home side then had a free-kick from by the corner flag that came into a clutch of players at the near post; the ball broke and ran across the front of goal with no one there to add the vital touch.
On 40 minutes the deadlock was broken by a bizarre own goal. A long kick down-field by Rishton glanced off Nelson’s head on the edge of his area and looped over keeper Sam Lee into the net via the underside of the bar.
The lead only lasted two minutes when a free-kick from Moriarty from inside his own half found Michael Garnett in the box. The big Oxenhope striker brought the ball down, turned and fired in an unstoppable strike.
Early in the second half keeper Lee had to be at his very best when keeping out a snap-shot with a superb flying save.
Oxenhope took the lead on the hour-mark when Moriarty swung in a cross beyond the far post. James Bailey controlled the ball on the byline before striking the ball confidently into the top far corner of the net from the acutest of angles.
Ten minutes later substitute Nivard Trowers cleverly threaded the ball between defenders for Garnett to give the visitors a two-goal cushion.
The tie appeared to be in the bag for the West Yorkshire League side but, on 78 minutes, a Steeton free-kick was put into the danger area and forced in at close range by Andy King.
Minutes later, the County Amateur side were level when sub Adam Spencer was first to react in a goalmouth skirmish.
It was game on as Oxenhope regained the lead with a precise Moriarty corner that found Garnett unmarked and he headed in for his hat-trick. The big striker, who had been a handful for the home defence all afternoon, was at it again when he forced his way through a cluster of defenders to powerfully hit home his fourth.
In the final minute a free-kick was cheekily flicked in by Pete Hanson to reduce the arrears but Oxenhope had done enough.
Oxenhope meet newly-promoted Hunslet in the league on Saturday at Marley, while Steeton have no game.
