Teenage weighlifting sensation Rebekah Tiler has spoken of her delight after being nominated for the BBC young sports personality of the year award.

The Bingley Grammar School student is one of ten contenders, including Solheim Cup-winning golfer Charley Hull and, controversially, Manchester United’s Belgian-born midfielder Adnan Januzaj.

Rebekah, who is just 14 years old, is now looking forward to the big day, which takes place at the First Direct Arena in Leeds on Sunday, December 15.

“I can’t believe it, it’s just amazing,” said Rebekah, who last week won gold in the junior and youth sections of the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Malaysia.

“It all makes me feel great and I’m just looking forward to being there. Everyone at my school’s behind me and I can’t wait to get there because it should be a really good event.”

Despite coming up against such strong competition, with winning such a big habit, Rebekah has high expectations of where she would like to finish.

“I’m definitely hoping I can get into the top three because that would be really big, but I’m just really happy to be there,” said the Denholme resident.

With the country’s biggest sports stars set to flood to Leeds on the night, multiple record-breaker Rebekah singled out one person she wants to see.

She said: “I can’t wait for the big day. Who am I looking forward to meeting the most? Tom Daley, because he is probably the most interesting and he’s won an Olympic medal as well.”

Rebekah’s mum Emma was purring with pride over her daughter’s nomination.

She said: “I don’t know how to describe it. I’m just immensely proud.

“All of the family are just really supportive of her and have got behind her all the way. She puts so much hard work into her weightlifting and I don’t know how she does it.

“We’re all really excited and we’re just looking for something nice for her to wear now.”

Rebekah hopes to take part at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year and explained: “My next target is to do well there – and try and win gold.

“My dream then is obviously to go on to the Olympics and do my best to win a medal there.”

* The final three-person shortlist will be revealed on Blue Peter on Thursday, December 12, three days before the awards night.
