Eastburn boxer Sadiq's speed earns England ABA final spot
Eastburn Amateur Boxing Club’s Ambreen Sadiq has made it through to a national final.
She won her semi-final at the England ABA Female Championships in Liverpool last weekend, while Keighley ABC’s Chelsea Heaps suffered a narrow defeat in her last-four clash.
Ambreen – nicknamed Beano – triumphed in the senior class B 54kg category with an excellent points decision victory over a much taller opponent in Kirsty Hill (Grimsby ABC).
She was able to combat her opponent’s much longer reach with her speed and fast footwork to get close inside and offload some effective combination punches.
It was this and her ability to sustain the pressure for the full three rounds that proved effective and augurs well for her in the final.
Keighley ABC 16-year-old starlet Chelsea lost to a majority decision in the junior 52kg class to a much more experienced opponent, Courtney Hughes.
However, Chelsea gave a really good account of herself, in only her fourth ever contest, moving her Maccles-field ABC opponent well around the ring.
She pressurised to good effect at times but lacked the ability to administer the knockout blow.
The Macclesfield girl’s longer reach and experience proved decisive in seeing her clinch a narrow points win.
The experience gained by Chelsea at this level and against quality opponents will stand her in good stead for the future. There is also the possibility of her gaining an opportunity to box against her victor in the future.
* Keighley boxer Muhammad Ali claimed the 50-52kg title in the National Ambition Boxing Championship after his opponent Harry Limburn pulled out in the final.
