Having blazed a victory trail at Cowling Cragg in the John Metcalfe Trophy Trial the previous week, East Morten landlord Martin Crosswaite had to settle for second place on Sunday.

He was competing in the Hillsborough & District Motorcycle Club’s Yorkshire Centre ACU Trials Championship at Ughill, where 16-year-old Denby Dale youngster Jack Price took the spoils.

Price beat his Yeadon-Guiseley club colleague Cross-waite by two penalties, riding his 300cc JST Road and Trial-sponsored Gas Gas machine.

Colin Appleyard’s off-road manager Kevin Feeney just missed winning the Inter class, which was won by Andrew Jackson.

Crosswaite had excelled a week earlier in Bradford DMC’s John Metcalfe trial, riding the entire course without losing a single penalty.

East Keswick landscaper Ben Hemingway and Trawden elevator engineer Ross Crosby stuck with Crosswaite but incurred penalties at Lumb Waterfall sections where the stream and gradients tested the 53 main-course contestants.

The class winners were Oakworth’s Darren Holmes, Pudsey’s Mark Chippendale and Hartshead’s Stewart Oughton.

In the youths, Keighley’s Joseph Fox and Aaron Carter ruled class A clubman A and class C clubman B age groups respectively. Cononley youngster Will Harrison took the clubman B route to win class B in his age group.
