Workington Town 22 Keighley Cougars 24

Josh Lynam’s second-half double helped Cougars claim a dramatic third league win of the season today.

Paul March’s side trailed 22-4 early in the second half but they mounted an impressive fightback which harvested four tries in 15 minutes.

Cougars battled against relegation for much of last season but they have made an impressive start to 2014 and this latest success underlined the character in their side.

They led in the 17th minute when a 40-20 from Danny Jones gave them the field position which led to Sean Hesketh powering over the line.

But tries from Andy Morris, Jason Mossop and Callum Phillips, and two Kayle Connor goals, gave Workington a 16-4 half-time lead.

Town increased their lead eight minutes into the second half when Jordan James, one of four dual-registration players from Wigan, scored a try which Connor converted.

Yet Cougars steadied themselves and replied on the hour when a fine passing sequence culminated in James Craven going over.

Six minutes later, a clever stabbed kick on the last tackle from Danny Jones was taken cleanly by Lynam, who touched down under the posts for Jones to convert.

In the last ten minutes, another clever kick from Jones was touched down by centre Elliott Cosgrove.

There was an air of inevitability about it all now as Town just could not get themselves back into the game.

There was just one chance but Connor failed to gather a good kick for the corner by Carl Forber with the line gaping.

Then, helped by a series of penalties in their favour, Cougars enjoyed possession where it mattered and Jones provided the pass for Lynam to score his second try.

With Jones out of sorts with his goalkicking, Paul Handforth took over and stroked the ball between the posts for the winning points.
