There were plenty of local competitors to the fore at Rough Holden last Saturday, where Bradford Motor Club staged the fifth round of the Autowbars Novice and Beginners’ Championship Series for a total of 51 contenders.

Young Silsden riders Josh McParland and Gabby Whitham enjoyed success in their classes, as did Joseph Fox, from Keighley, and Alfie Lampkin – son of trials legend Dougie.

Paul Bailey masterminded the hillside course high above Silsden. Eight sections and four laps were on the menu but the mid-event shower certainly altered the third, fourth and fifth ones.

The launchpad up the final hill at the fourth was a tester and defied quite a few riders. Lampkin and McParland found the key but the latter launched into space on his second lap off the right-hand bank and stopped inches short of a huge rock – but kept moving.

The final round in the Autowbars Championship takes place at Deep-cliffe Farm, Harden, on April 13.

* Silsden’s James Lampkin warmed up for the Scottish Six-Day Trial with third place on the hard course at Yeadon-Guiseley’s Trial at Addingham Moorside on Sunday behind winner Jack Price and Luke Walker.

Gabby Whitham got her 125cc Jota Gas halfway up the Clubman B results, which, for the Silsden teenager, was good after only two major outings on the machine.

Twenty-two youngsters rode a Paul Whitham course of five laps and six sections. Harry Heming-way threw his Oset at the rocks with abandon, leaving Elliott Laws and Josh McParland, both able triallers, trailing in his wake.

Henry Stephenson lost third place on a tie-breaker to McParland.

After a bad day at the office on Saturday at the Bradford Trial, Keighley’s Myles Hutchinson ass-umed his normal dominance of the middle course, while Ben Ogden ruled the easy course contenders.
