Keighley’s Leah Moorby made a gold-medal winning return to action on home soil at the City of Liverpool Open Championships.

It was her first domestic competition of the year following her bronze success in the World Junior Champ-ionships in Taiwan.

Leah has enjoyed the limelight since her return from Taipei. She was a special guest at the recent Leeds Rhinos v Salford game on Easter Monday and has also been nominated for a Sue Ryder York-shire Woman of Achieve-ments award in Leeds this month.

But it was back down to business for the Oakworth girl in Liverpool. Her name on the competitors list appears to encourage opponents to switch to other categories, which meant the Team Ultimate fighter found herself having to move up two classes to compete at -59kg.

She usually fights at -52kg but the result was the same as Leah took gold with three convincing displays.

Leah’s first bout was against a Lion Taekwondo member from Barnsley.

She took command straight away, with a trademark head shot opening the scoring to give her a 3-0 lead, which Leah built on to win 10-4.

Next up was a Liverpool Elite opponent, whom Leah dominated to cruise to a 33-1 win in one of the highest scores of the day.

Leah’s final was a good bout to win against her bigger and heavier opponent from host club Liverpool Academy.

The honours were level at 0-0 after the first round, with the Holy Family student taking the second to lead 2-1.

The Academy fighter edged into a 4-2 lead but Leah quickly regained the advantage with a head shot to lead 5-4 before a spinning back kick added two further points to end the match 7-4.

Cullingworth’s Ellie Bow-den, of Horizon Taek-wondo, also won gold at the event.
