Rebekah Tiler gave another astonishing demonstration of her prowess at the weekend.

The 15-year-old from Denholme became the youngest weightlifter to win a senior women’s British Weightlifting title as she took gold in the 69kg class at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena.

And, even more impressively, the Bingley Grammar School pupil’s total of 205kg would also have been good enough to win gold in both the higher categories (75kg and 75+kg).

Mytholmroyd Weightlifting Club member Tiler snatched 90kg and lifted 115kg in the clean and jerk.

She missed out on a new personal best in the snatch at 95kg as she lost her balance, allowing her left knee to touch the floor.

However, it did little to mar the day for the teenager, who said afterwards: “It’s an amazing feeling to be the youngest person ever to win the British Championships.”

“It gives me a lot of confidence going into the Commonwealth Games.”

As for the near-miss on her snatch personal best of 95kg, former athlete Rebekah said: “It was quite close but I’ll get it next time, hopefully.”

The performances backed up her gold and two silvers from the European Youth Championship in Poland the previous weekend and was the third time that the teenager has broken the Commonwealth Games qualifying mark.

The only negative, record near-miss apart, was that Tiler again suffered dizziness while lifting, as she had in Poland.

Her mum Emma said: “That is probably down to a bit of everything, including the fact that she is lifting heavier weights and that there was a long gap bet-ween the snatch and the clean and jerk. We just need to get some more glucose inside her.”

Tommy Yule, British Weight Lifting performance director, said: “It’s always difficult competing in back-to-back major competitions and, with the European Youth Championships only a week prior to the British Seniors, this month’s calendar was always going to be a challenge for Rebekah.

“While she didn’t secure personal bests, Rebekah consolidated her position as a strong contender for Commonwealth Games success and a very talented young athlete.”
