Rowell is Denholme's hero in sensational win
11:20am Thursday 17th July 2014 in Sport
SECOND-placed Denholme triumphed over third-placed Shelf in one of the most thrilling games of the season in the Bradford & District Evening League.
Jaweed Waheed (37) helped to rescue Shelf from 55-5 to a respectable 126-9, which included five penalty runs for the ball hitting a helmet.
At 38-3, the home side were in trouble and found themselves requiring 50 off the last three overs. Jamie Rowell (40no) and Tom Cummins (47no) continued the recovery, but they still needed a seemingly improbable 21 runs off the last over.
With Rowell facing the last ball, he dispatched it over the square-leg boundary for six for Denholme to win the game by one run.
The victory leaves Denholme two points behind leaders Salem Atheltic, who enjoyed a comfortable win over Bingley Congs, with the top two meeting tonight.
Wibsey Park Chapel and Buttershaw St Paul’s recorded comfortable wins over Shipley Providence and Keighley respectively to jointly claim top spot in Division Two, taking advantage of Thackley’s surprise defeat at Cambing.
Oakworth recorded the highest score of the day, making 201-4 as Jack Hainsworth (41), Adam Smith (46), Brannon Lawn (51no) and Lewis Wrathall (30) all enjoyed themselves on Queensbury’s picturesque ground.
James Thompson (53no) did well for the home team, who finished on 125-5.
Indian Panthers and Mayfield enjoyed wins over Stonewhite and Daisy Hill respectively to move up the table.
