WIBSEY Park Chapel crowned a great season in the Bradford Evening League by adding the Finals Day trophy to their Division Two crown.

The new champions beat Division One winners Salem Athletic, as well as with the poor weather, in the final to become only the eighth club to lift the trophy since the Finals Day competition started in 1996.

Chapel defeated holders Denholme in the first game of the day at the Keighley Cricket Club venue after restricting them to 109-5.

Kashif Naveed showed his quality in making a decisive unbeaten 54, with Denholme regretting a missed opportunity early in his innings. Skipper Chris Brown (25no) ensured his side's place in the final.

Salem made an impressive 153-8 off 16 overs against Thackley and although Jack Young (49) led a spirited response, he lacked support and the challenge ended on 114-6.

The final took place in wet conditions, with the normally free-scoring Salem batsmen finding runs difficult to come by.

Israr Ullah (51no) was the exception but wickets fell around him as his side subsided from 50-1 off eight overs to 116-8 by the end of their innings.

Naveed, who had topped the divisional batting and bowling averages for the season, again proved a key player for Chapel.

His knock of 37, along with a valuable 30 from Ricky Hassell, saw their side home for the loss of only two wickets, much to the joy of their team-mates and supporters.

The Evening League thanked all the players and officials for an excellent day of cricket played in unfriendly weather conditions. Special mention went to Keighley, who proved to be excellent hosts.
