ZARA Knappy is a double medal winner for England.

The 18-year-old from Oakworth not only finished third in the under-20 junior women's race at the British and Irish Junior Mountain Running Championships and Home Countries' International in Glendalough, Ireland.

The former Oakbank student also helped England A to team gold in County Wicklow alongside runner-up Lydia Sharpe (Gateshead AC) and fourth-placed Lizzy Apsley (Stockport Harriers & AC), who Knappy overhauled on the final descent to take bronze by eight seconds.

It was the fourth time that Keighley & Craven AC member Zara had represented her country, and she completed the challenging 5.6km course that included 314 metres of climb in 28min 31sec.

Gold went to Scotland's Louise Mercer but England's greater packing meant that the Scots could only finish second in the team event on 17 points, eight behind England but 12 ahead of bronze medallists Wales, who pipped Ireland.

Bingley Harrier Matthew Merrick, competing for England B, was 12th in the boys' under-17 race in 25min 45sec, where Ilkley Harrier Ruaridh Mon-Williams was 17th in 26:30.

Ruaridh's clubmate Lucy Haines was seventh in the under-17 girls' race in 23:25.

England retained the City of Edinburgh overall team trophy, also winning the boys' under-20 and girls' under-17 team events.
