ALFIE Moses survived a fall to win the second round of the National Trophy Cyclo-Cross Series at Southampton Sports Centre.

The Paul Milnes Cycles-Bradford Olympic RC rider took a tumble when leading into the woods on the first lap and finished up at the back of the field.

However, by the time the race settled down, the Keighley teenager was in a group of six at the front alongside David Barnes (Sports Traider), Joshua Waters (Sherwood Pines), Ewan Grivell-Mellor (Mid-Shropshire Wheelers), Matthew Worton (Pioneer-Scott Synchros) and Tom Seaman (Nutcracker Racing).

It wasn't long though before Barnes and Moses broke away from the lead group, with Moses happy to play follow my leader as Barnes couldn't shake off the series front-runner.

With just over three laps remaining, Moses put a gap over Barnes in the woods and, as he passed the pits, the latter was looking around, perhaps looking to consolidate second place rather than chase his rival.

From there on, Moses never looked like he was going to give up his 30-second advantage, saying afterwards: "I came off coming out of the woods. I jumped up again but had dropped back to about third or fourth.

"David and I went round together for a couple of laps, taking it in turns. I had a bit of a gap after the woods and thought 'let's do it, full gas' and that was it."

Keighley can also lay claim to victory in the men's 50-plus veterans' race via former Stocksbridge resident Chris Young (Pedalsport CC), who pipped Hargroves Cycles-Ridley RT's Steve Davies in a battle that almost went to the line.

A quick start by Phil Roach and Dave McMullen set the nature of the race, and Young and Davies weren't prominent during the opening laps but soon worked their way to the head of the race and settled into a fast pace, with the returning Tim Gould (wwwzepnat.com) looking happy in third.

The leaders took the race to the final bend, Young just getting the better of Davies to ride the final few metres alone, taking the win by three seconds.

Cononley's Ian Taylor (Jedi Cycle Sport) was second in the veteran men's 40-49 years' category, with Darren Atkins (Ride Coventry) securing his fifth Southampton win in as many years to claim back the series lead from him.

A brisk start soon had the field lined out, with the main two heading proceedings with a small group including Chris Rathbone, Mike Simpson and Dan Alexander.

Atkins and Taylor were soon into their stride and made a useful gap that was never really bridged.

While the lead swapped between them on the final lap, Atkins had the final kick on the finish straight to win by four seconds. Haworth's Andy Peace (Jedi Cycle Sport) was eighth.

Marie Jackson (Paul Milnes Cycles-Bradford Olympic RC) was fourth in the veterans women's race to be third overall, while fellow Bingleyite Rob Jebb (Hope factory Racing) was 14th in the elite men's race but East Morton clubmate Annabel Simpson did not finish the women's race.
