SILSDEN'S Oscar Hancock, who is only four and was making his debut, was presented with a man of the match award by Great Britain's only 2012 Olympic taekwondo champion Jade Jones in the first sparring competition of the domestic calendar at Bradford's Richard Dunn Sports Centre.

About 400 competitors from 40 clubs, including Horizon Taekwondo Academy, which has clubs in Silsden and Keighley, took part in the groundbreaking event.

Looking on at the entrants, who came from as far afield as Ireland, Scotland and Wales, were 21-year-old Jones and Commonwealth Championship semi-finalist Stephanie Allen.

The tournament, which was watched by over 800 spectators and is one of the largest in the United Kingdom, was hailed as a huge success, with competition host Master Rick Simpson saying: "The tournament was the first one on one competition to feature Octagonal-shaped sparring courts, which are the new way for taekwondo competitions.

"We also used the Daedo Truescore system for scoring points for competitors, which will be used in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games."

There was also a 15-minute demonstration by Horizon Taekwondo Academy, showing off their two to five year olds, such as Oscar, who are also known as taekwondo tots, which is going viral around the United Kingdom.

They demonstrated kicking, punching, shouting and counting in Korean.

Competing for Horizon Taekwondo Academy were not only Oscar, but also Keighley's Cara Harbourne and Nimrah Mahmood, both ten, plus seven-year-olds Aisha Latif and Ammarah Mahmood.
