Wyke A 12 Worth Village 32

WORTH went six points clear at the top after claiming their sixth league win on the trot.

But the comfortable scoreline did not reflect the nature of this hard-fought encounter as the hosts provided Village with one of their toughest games of the season.

Chris Mahomett put the visitors in front with the opening try and, though Wyke responded with a converted score, Worth regained the lead. Second row Sean Knapper powered over and then full back Jack Copperwaite, who was excellent, crossed after his kick and chase.

However, Wyke reduced the half-time deficit to 14-12 following a converted interception try.

It took Village 20 minutes into the second half before they extended their advantage, the impressive Luke Whiteley going over after being set up by Billy McKay.

Joe Copperwaite, who kicked four goals, was next to touch down following a passing move, with man of the match Rob Spencer the chief creator.

Joe Buckley put the icing on the cake with a fine individual try which saw him beat three men.

With four games to go, Village are in pole position to claim the Division Six West crown. Title rivals Meltham All Blacks lost ground with a 20-16 defeat at Greetland All Rounders A, whom Worth visit on Saturday.

Cowling Harlequins' game at home to Illingworth A was postponed.
