KEIGHLEY'S Great Britain Taekwondo international Leah Moorby claimed victory in her first domestic competition of the year at NTC Open Championships in Nottingham.

Following the disappointment of being unable to compete in last month's Spanish Open due to the French air traffic strike, this was the Oakbank student's chance to get some match time under her belt as she prepares for the Austrian Open in Innsbruck at the end of May.

Leah faced Katy Bone from the Chi Taekwondo club in County Durham in her semi-final and started off in impressive style. She opened the scores with a head shot and a further body shot saw her take a 4-0 lead at the end of the first round.

Another head shot extended the lead to 7-0 by the end of the second before the Keighley black belt stepped up the pressure in the final round, adding further points with a superb back kick and two further head shots to stop the contest by way of a 12-point gap at 15-2.

Leah's opponent in the final was Isabelle Baker from Team Jaguar in London. The British and Commonwealth number one was in top form as she dominated her opponent from the start, scoring with a back kick, two head shots and a couple of well-timed body shots to build an 11-2 lead after the first round.

The second round saw no let up for the Jaguar player as Leah was relentless in her attacks, adding two spectacular double head shots that picked up 12 points. Further body shots gave Leah a 26-4 lead by the end of the second round, when the contest was again stopped due to the 12-point gap ruling.

Victory saw Leah extend her unbeaten run in all domestic competitions since September 2012.

Her dad Gary said: "Leah was disappointed not to get to Spain as the competition was part of the selection criteria for the Junior European Championships later this year.

"However, so is the Austrian Open and Nottingham gave her some welcome match time that her coach Kathy Hook had planned as part of her preparations for the Innsbruck competition."
