FORMER Yorkshire opening bowler Iain Wardlaw was the hero as Cleckheaton overcame a battling Undercliffe side by 14 runs at Moorend in the second round of the Sovereign Health Care Priestley Cup today.

Wardlaw, who played in the recent World Cup for Scotland, took 6-57 as last season’s beaten finalists secured their place in the last eight.

Gulsheraz Ahmed (66) and Fahim Ashraf (58) hit half-centuries for Undercliffe as they made 258-9 in reply to a Cleckheaton total of 272-8, which was built around the efforts of Richard Whitehurst (49), Andy Gorrod (44), John Wood (35) and James Lee (33).

Joining Cleckheaton in the last eight will be holders Pudsey St Lawrence. They beat Hanging Heaton for the second time this weekend with opener Mark Robertshaw making an unbeaten 107.

Adam Waite (79) shared an opening stand of 147 with Robertshaw as St Lawrence chased down a Hanging Heaton total of 252-9 to win by five wickets. Ian Philliskirk and Nick Connolly were joint top-scorers for Hanging Heaton with 71.

Woodlands were knocked out after a 36-run defeat against New Farnley. Rishy Limbechaya (59) and Mark Lawson (49) shared a sixth-wicket stand of 101 as their side made 208-8. Woodlands lost early wickets to Lawson (4-28) and even Chris Brice (67) and Grant Soames (41) could not save them.

Opener Callum Geldart (98) and Nick Lindley (73no) put on 159 as Pudsey Congs romped to a nine-wicket win over Bowling Old Lane. Ahsan Butt made (64) in the Division Two side’s 181.

Bankfoot’s overseas player Cosmond Walters (114no) and former Yorkshire player Neil Nicholson (101) put on 182 for the third wicket as their side made 260-3 in a 71-run win at Keighley.

Spinner Noman Ali (4-15) and Phil Slater (4-41) bowled out Morley for 153 as Bradford & Bingley eased to a 99-run victory. James McNichol made 63 for Morley.

Lightcliffe, winners in 2013, defeated Saltaire by 33 runs. Rhys Jowett (64) helped Lightcliffe to 219-8 despite the efforts of Michael Eglin (5-43). Saltaire were dismissed for 186, falling away after an opening stand of 77 between Rashid Ayub (72) and Adeel Nazir (48).

Hartshead Moor were the day’s unluckiest losers. They went down narrowly on run rate when their match at Yeadon was halted by rain.
