RECORDS tumbled like dominoes at this year’s Cowling Gala Fell Race.

There was a surprise winner of the men's race with Keighley & Craven’s Ian Willis making light of the variable weather conditions to cross the line first in 20min 09sec.

He was followed into the gala field by Ilkley Harriers’ Martin Archer (21:16). Third was Clayton le Moors’ Alan Life (21:18), who also set a new V50 record.

The ladies race was won by Barlick Fell Runners’ Hannah Watson (26:01) with Keighley & Craven’s Catherine Mercer taking second place in 26:29 and Wharfedale Harriers’ Jennifer Battersby finishing third in 26:30.

There were just three entrants in the under-17 race which was won by Wharfedale’s Thomas Nelson in 26.26.

Second place went to his sister Keera (31.16) with Keighley & Craven’s Alana Willis third in 33:54.

The under-14, under-12 and under-nine races all set off together which led to a mass scramble at the wall as they all climbed over at the same time.

There were some excellent individual performances in these races with four of the five new records being set by junior runners.

Wharfedale’s Jack Muir (11:35) won the under-14 boys race from club mate Will Thompson (12:15) who was third overall.

Ilkley Harriers Poppy Anderson won the girls race in a new record time of 12:13 and was second overall while Wharfedale's Charlotte Barrett was close behind in 12:17 as she came fourth overall.

There was a second victory of the season and a new record for the under-12 winner Alex Thompson. The Wharfedale Harriers runner clocked 8:18.

The girls winner also smashed the championship record. Lilly Carr of Keighley & Craven set a new best time for her age group of 9:11 as she came third overall.

The second and third boys were Wharfedale’s Sam Smith (8:21) and Ilkley Harriers’ Lewis Carr (9:26) while

the second and third girls were Keighley & Craven’s Beth Roberts (9:40) and Broughton Runners’ Emily Swarbrick (10:05).

Ilkley Harriers’ Jonathan Archer (6:20) took the honours in the under-nine race while Barlick Fell Runners’ Harley Treitl was second in 6:25 and Ilkley Harriers’ Dylan Carr was third in 6:56.

The fifth record of the day was claimed by Keighley & Craven’s Hannah Robinson (6:25) as she won the girls race and came third overall.

She was followed in second place by Broughton Runners’ Olivia Swarbrick (6:58) and Wharfedale’s Lilly Milner (7.09), who were second and third respectively.
