KEIGHLEY'S Muhammad Ali has won a silver medal at the European Boxing Championships in Bulgaria.

But there was clear disappointment on the 19-year-old flyweight's face when it was announced that he had been outpointed by the top seed, Russia's seed Daniel Asenov.

Ali's performances have earned him qualification for October's World Championships, where he has the chance to qualify for the Rio Olympics.

The seven-strong Great Britain team won one gold, four silver and one bronze medal. Welshman Joe Cordina was their one winner, while Ali, Harvey Horn, Qais Ashfaq and Pat McCormack all took silver, and Joshua Buatsi picked up bronze.

McCormnack and Ali were competing in their first senior championships.

GB Boxing's performance director, Rob McCracken said: "The European Championships is one of the toughest events in the boxing calendar so to come away with six medals and five boxers in the final is a tremendous achievement and an important step on the Road to Rio for a very talented but relatively inexperienced group of boxers."
