AARON Ollett began training with Cougars this week and admitted he is relishing the challenge of helping the club to promotion in 2016.

The forward scored one try for Hull KR and made 26 appearances, including well over a dozen last season, but has now joined Keighley on a one-year deal.

Ollett, who turns 23 today, had his first training session with Paul March’s squad on Tuesday and is aiming to nail down a starting role in the back row.

Rovers academy graduate Ollett said: “I enjoyed it at Hull KR. I had been there a while and managed to play quite a few games this year.

“I thought I was going to get another contract, but that didn’t quite happen, so it was all a bit last minute looking around for a new club.

“Keighley came in for me and it just went from there, so I’m looking forward to the challenge at Cougars now.

“Sonny Esslemont and I will travel together from Hull and it’s just nice to have someone there in the squad who I know and have played with already.”

Dropping down two divisions into a part-time environment will mean Ollett now has to look for a job to supplement his wage from Cougars.

He added: “I’m looking to get a job but I’m not rushing into anything. I’m just seeing what there is and would like to get a trade behind me.

“It’s something I did at school and college, so I could continue with that.”

Ollett’s arrival at Cougar Park raised eyebrows in that he impressed for a Hull KR side who reached the Challenge Cup final, suffering a record-breaking 50-0 defeat at Wembley, before they won all seven of their games in the Qualifiers to preserve their Super League status.

“I played quite a few games this year and, while it was a bit up and down for the team, I enjoyed my rugby.

“Obviously the experience of getting to Wembley was brilliant, apart from the result.

“Then we won all our games in the Qualifiers, which ensured we finished the season on a high.

“Scoring my first try at home to Castleford was a particularly great experience.”

On how he sees himself fitting into the side, Ollett added: “I’d say probably loose forward or second row are my best positions.

“I’ve still got desire to get back into Super League. Hopefully if we get promoted next season, then you never know what might happen.”

Meanwhile, Cougars’ Errea-branded replica kit design will be released shortly and has been designed (home and away plus some off field kit) by Beckfoot School pupils.

The club are hosting a Garry Schofield, Andy Gregory and Lee Crooks afternoon on Sunday, November 22 from 2pm at Cougar Park.

Entry is free but fans who would like to attend are being asked to let the club as soon as possible in order to ascertain numbers.
