Tyersal 2 Steeton 3

STEETON go into Saturday's Premier Division Cup final against Huddersfield YMCA on a winning note thanks to a hat-trick from Lee Reilly as they rounded off their league campaign at second-bottom Tyersal.

On a poor pitch, it was tough for the Chevrons to play any kind of football. The length of the grass not only made passing difficult, it also meant running with the ball was hard.

Steeton dominated large parts of the first half, with Sam Rooke and Kyle Fox just heading over Michael Rhodes corners and Andy Holden blasting over from the edge of the box.

At the other end, Tyersal struck on the break but debutant keeper Harry Jarman did well to push an effort round the post.

Joe Mason crossed for leading scorer Reilly, who was narrowly wide, and, with Tim Hird and Dec Consoli on top in midfield, it seemed only a matter of time before Steeton scored.

However, the longer it remained goalless the more frustrated they became. Tyersal were reduced to ten men after Casey Dowthwaite was punched in front of referee Alan Clough, who produced a straight red card.

The numerical advantage counted for nothing as a ball over the top saw a Tyersal striker unleash an unstoppable shot past Jarman.

Steeton continued to push as Fox headed against the bar and Reilly struck the foot of the post. Sub Andy Briggs appeared to have a perfectly good goal chalked out for offside.

Steeton then levelled when Reilly found space in the box and fired home but Tyersal went straight down the other end and their striker was allowed way to much space to drill home.

Steeton equalised for a second time when Consoli’s deep cross was headed home by Reilly, who got the winner with only five minutes remaining.

Alistair Morgan was beaten to a loose ball in the box by the home keeper, who then kicked out at Morgan off the ball. Clough awarded the spot kick and Reilly blasted home.

Manager Roy Mason was pleased with the points but felt the performance lacked the conviction of previous weeks.

He said: “We were good for the win but I didn’t feel that we played to our potential.

"That said, it was impossible to play any kind of football on the pitch. It was important to finish with a win and give us some positives going into this week’s cup final with Huddersfield YMCA.”

Steeton's final against league champions Huddersfield YMCA is at Lower Hopton on Saturday (2pm) and the club would welcome all support.

Steeton: Jarman, Rhodes, Morgan, Fox, Rooke, Hird, Holden, Consoli, Reilly, J Mason (Briggs), Douthwaite.
