KEIGHLEY’S Cara Thornton came away with two silver medals and a bronze from her first appearance at the junior jiu jitsu foundation national championships in Telford.

The 13-year-old, from Keighley Jiu Jitsu club, fought in the annual randori tournament where competitors fight against opponents in throwing and groundwork.

Cara excelled in both disciplines she entered, gatamae-waza (ground fighting) and nage-waza (standing throwing).

She also took part in the open competition and took a second silver after a tough series of fights against opponents larger and older than herself.

Club instructor Anthony Detoeuf said: “I am so pleased for Cara, she has done herself and the club proud and it goes to show that all the hard work has paid off.

“She comes to the club, trains hard, is a model student and is showing excellent potential for the future."

The club train on the top floor of The Mill on Greengates Road above NRgym. Sessions take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6pm to 7.30pm and Saturdays 9am to 10am.
