REBEKAH Tiler, who is still coming to terms with being selected for her first Olympic Games in Rio, would love to finish in the top eight in Brazil – but she is not putting pressure on herself.

The 17-year-old weight lifter from Denholme, who broke two national records at the Cybex British Championships last month in the women's 69kg section, will be one of the youngest athletes to compete for Great Britain next month.

She came agonisingly close to a Commonwealth Games medal in Glasgow two years ago, finishing fourth, but is due to face a much higher level of competition and does not expect to challenge for the crown.

Following her selection, she said: “I am so pleased, I have trained so hard for this and now to have made it on the squad is brilliant.

“This time round, it’s not about winning, it’s just about experience. I am only 17 so I still have plenty of years to come so I am just going out to enjoy myself.

“It’s quite cool that I am one of the younger members of the Team GB squad but I am looking forward to getting out there and seeing if there are any other people who are a similar age to me and it will be nice to see how they got into their sport.

"To finish eighth would be fantastic."

Former Bingley Grammar School pupil Rebekah, whose new British marks were 102kg in the snatch and a 227kg overall total at the Ricoh Arena, added: "I would probably need to lift 230kg for that, so that is only three 3kg more.

"Coventry went better than I expected as I was under a lot of pressure but I have been putting in a lot of hard work for a lot of months.

"I also have a fantastic support network, including my club coach Eddie Halstead, my butcher Ian Hewitt, who gives me steak, chicken and eggs, and the physio and strength and conditioning coaches from British Weight Lifting."

The shoulder injury suffered by the more experienced Zoe Smith, which caused her to withdraw from the women's 63kg event at Coventry, made Team GB's decision up for them on who to send to Rio.

Halstead, who coaches Rebekah at Mytholmroyd, said: "It would have been a very difficult decision otherwise.

"Zoe is the more experienced at 22 and her 215kg at 63kg would probably just edge it over Rebekah's 227kg at 69kg but Rebekah, who has worked really hard since January, is improving while Zoe has levelled out.

"Rebekah's 102kg lift was also a Commonwealth youth and junior record but she will probably need to lift 102kg in the snatch and 128kg in the clean and jerk to make the top ten in Rio, while eighth would be fantastic.

"To the uninitiated, it look as if Rebekah rushes things when she gets to the bar in competitions as she used to dash on from the side, lift and go off.

"But she was a lot better at Coventry as she entered from the rear of the mat and was therefore taking her time more."

Halstead added: "Rebekah, whose fan base is growing worldwide – the massive cheer when she broke the national record nearly took the roof off – is well grounded and is a really nice person."

The Calderdale College student is currently in the first of a three-week training camp at Loughborough University (Tuesday to Thursday this week and Tuesday to Friday for the next two weeks) before setting off for a training camp at Belo Horizonte, just north of Rio, on Monday, July 25.

Halstead added: "The weightlifting starts on Friday, August 5, and Rebekah's event is on the following Wednesday.

"At London 2012, there were only ten lifters in Rebekah's category but if there were say 17 this time that might mean A and B groups."

Sonny Webster, in the 94kg category, has been chosen for the sole men's place by Great Britain.
