SKIPTON Veterans produced an uninspiring performance in their penultimate inter-district game against Leeds despite an overall 29-27 victory.
In the home leg at Craven, the locals shared the winners with victory assured after good wins by Len Buxton and Idris Wade. The visitors put up a good show and boasted four winners, although three of them were 21-20 victories that could have been avoided.
Lack of communication cost the away team any chance of success at Burley Park, where they turned up with a man short and were well beaten, despite three winners, the best of whom was Alister Keighley with a 21-4 victory.
Skipton's last match is versus Wakefield on July 29 when hopefully a full side will be available.
The Federation Over-60s event continues tomorrow (10.45am) at Elland C&BC when Worth Valley will be hoping to regain top spot after a brief period of inactivity. They meet Barnsley & Wath in the first game followed by Doncaster, with the opening match looking the hardest.
With a shortage of entries, the Skipton Sunday Handicap reverted to a one-day affair at Broughton Road last Sunday. This saw a surprise result when the winner was Graeme Mitchell, of Devon, who comfortably beat top Settle player David Leeming 21-9 in a surprise appearance. Losing in the semi-finals were Mick Demain and Paul Drinkall.
A similar scenario awaits the Skipton Merit, which has been rearranged as a one-day event on August 14. Entries are still being taken for this.
There is a similar problem with the Valley Merit Doubles, scheduled for Lund Park this Sunday. Ring Mick Demain for further information.
The Yorkshire Parks team suffered defeat against Greater Manchester in a recent county match but at least Andrew Tate tasted victory in the home leg at Eccleshill.
The seniors managed a good victory over the East Midlands on the same day, with Barry Turnbull and David Hemsley recording wins in the home leg.
