RAIN almost curtailed the three Skipton League Cup finals last Thursday but they finally went ahead with a couple of shock results.

Keighley won Division One's Ken Johnson Trophy for the first time after narrowly defeating Silsden BC, with the result in doubt to the end. Silsden looked set for a good win but the last two for Keighley, Trevor and Richard Hargreaves, held their nerve to ensure a six-point victory to go with similar efforts by David Jacques and Sharon Gadd.

There was a shock in Division Two's Richard Lambert Cup at Gargrave where relegated Lund Park B gained four winners to comfortably beat promoted Devon B, with veteran Derek Burgess leading the way to an unexpected win.

In the Alan Ellis Salver at a rain-soaked Broughton Road, there was another surprise as Keighley C easily beat Sutton C, with the winners being shared. Good victories for Sutton from James and Jason Jennings and William Bestwick came to nought as Bernard Maddox’s 21-7 clinched the Division Three final for Keighley, who ended up the same number of points in front of their rivals as at the start.

The Worth Valley Veterans League has been completed, allowing teams to concentrate on the end of season cups, culminating in the five finals on September 26.

Settle A won Division One by a point from local rivals Gargrave A, with the top four clubs separated by just four points. Devon and Broughton Road go down.

Steeton A defeated relegated Oakworth to win Division Two just ahead of Colne Legion B – the same positions as last year when neither club went up. Settle B also went down.

Division Three went to Keighley B, who were just ahead of newcomers Colne Cricket while Lund Park A and Denholme are relegated.

Lund Park B replace their A team in the third tier, going up with Steeton B from Division Four. Going down are Keighley C and Highfield B. Finally, it was a double success in the new fifth division for Bingley B and C.

The Hebden Royd League has also finished with usual winners Cross Roads A losing out on points to old rivals Mytholmroyd A in Division One in a very close finish. Oakworth return to the top flight after some good efforts at the end of the season in Division Two. A final effort away sent Cullingworth B down. Oxenhope B also go up as runners-up.

Despite a narrow defeat by Halifax A in the Federation Over-60s League at Elland C & BC, Worth Valley travel to Littleborough tomorrow for the finals of the event with Halifax and teams from Bolton and Rochdale on a round-robin basis.

Skipton/Worth Valley Juniors are back in action on Saturday with a home game against Huddersfield C in the Yorkshire League at 7pm.

The Valley Handicap goes ahead at Cross Roads on Sunday (10.30am). Late entries are still being taken by Richard Hargreaves on 07913-940908.

Top local star Peter Clark played for Brighouse in the Yorkshire Cup final last weekend. Although he won his match, his team were well beaten by Crossgates.
