Steeton Reserves 2 Wakefield City 5

STEETON went down to a heavy defeat but the scoreline did not reflect the effort put in by the hosts.

They almost took the lead after only three minutes when Brandon Lawn's close range header was spectacularly pushed over by the City goalkeeper.

Steeton took the lead after 14 minutes when Greig Hudson beat the offside trap and rammed a powerful shot which was parried before the striker tapped home the loose ball from the tightest of angles.

The lead lasted only three minutes after a long throw-in on City's right was headed in from close range.

The visitors almost took the lead after 33 minutes but a long-range effort was tipped over at full stretch by goalkeeper Sam Mash.

But they went in front early in the second half when a weak shot from the right caught the home defence napping and slipped under Mash. The lead was increased five minutes later when the unfortunate Mash let slip his grasp on the ball after initially saving well and the ball was tapped into the unguarded net.

City's fourth goal came six minutes later when a free-kick on the right was nodded home at the far post. Steeton kept plugging away and both Olly Whitham and Tom Sowerbutts gave particularly good performances but the Chevrons conceded a fifth in the 72nd minute.

With time running out Steeton scored the second goal their efforts merited when a flighted ball into the box from Duncan Steele was met powerfully by Hudson, whose header crept in by the upright despite the goalkeeper getting both hands to the ball.

Steeton: Mash, Steele, Bryceland (Fox), Pearson, Rooke, Whitham, Harwood (Flaherty), Smith, Hudson, Lawn (Knight), Sowerbutts.
